Hey, CC3Cer's!! Just home from CHA catching up on chores at home and work, brimming with inspiration and glowing from being with good friends. It is such an inspirational environment, I can't wait to get home and get in the studio and create. I had gotten a bit of start before I left for California and finishing up this tag was a blast.
Tim's Distress Watercolor - part 2 tech is the feature for this challenge, found on page 40 of Compendium of Curiosities III. Awesome technique for those of us who are not watercolor artists, but love the organic look that watercolor brings. Want to learn the details of how to achieve it? Here are the details:
^^$^%& ^*(*&) *)*)&(* ^&*&% &^$^%# %$@$@. %$$^& *&^*&(& (&(&)(_+((*&^% ^#@@#$%^& *(YT$%^? &*()PKJB GTYUJ, HY^ygb nht^&U HGFR^ &Yhbn.
And that's all there is to it.*
I started my tag background with Wendy Vecchi Crackle Embossing Paste. I knew where my embellishments and focal point would be so I made sure to add the crackle in the areas where they would show. I spritzed the whole tag with Iced Spruce Distress Spray Stain. I need this groovy stuff by the gallon.
I wanted to add some Antique Linen Distress Paint over the cracked areas to tone down the white color. I picked up my spray bottle of water to thin it and Lo!! it was not water, but Iced Spruce Spray. Oh, accidental yummy distress joy!! Mixed it with my finger and rubbed over the tag.
I sprayed my trims with Iced Spruce as well. I've shown above the color of the teal seam binding I started with and how it changed.
"Everyday" from Alpha Parts - Framed, backed with a scrap from Wallflowers Paper Stash. I liked it without any paper backing but it didn't photograph well at all and was difficult to adhere without foam dots showing through. I tried a couple of other dimensional adhesives but couldn't get that lovin' feeling. Backing with paper and then building up grungeboard scraps did it for me. Its a beautiful thing.
LOVE Tim's Gothic stencil and Wendy's Silver Embossing Paste. LOVE coloring these beautiful metal Ideology roses with alcohol markers.
Loved this sweet little "dream" heart charm so I repeated the word for emphasis with die cut letters and also to balance the visual weight at the bottom of the tag.Is that Electic Elements fabric I see peaking from behind the butterfly panel? Why, yes it is. I officially love fabric now. I'm converted. I sprayed this bit with Iced Spruce to unify color in the piece overall.

ReplyDeleteCheryl, I am so happy to have gotten to spend time with you and the Crew once again at CHA. It was such a special time to have dinner with you and roam the show floor together. As for your tag, I LOVE it and I love the happy accident that turned into a great discovery. So much texture and technique in this one tag. Beautiful!

ReplyDeleteHoly Happy Accident, Cheryl! This background turned out fabulous. It reminds me too of a tiled ceiling. The butterflies came out great using your encrypted instructions! Great job!
ReplyDeleteYour attention to detail is fabulous! The butterflies are gorgeous and that background is to die for!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even read through your post yet, but had to skip down and leave a comment before the feeling I have for this lovely watercolor piece was crowded out with the technicals. Cheryl, you have mastered the water color, for sure with this amazing butterfly piece. I was thinking of doing some butterflies for this challenge, but no one could come close to what you have done here!!!
ReplyDeleteAs a water color artist (or so I fancy myself being), having the Tim tools at our disposal has all but made me throw out my watercolors and brushes. I have been doing this technique for years with real watercolors, but you have absolutely NAILED it down using Tim's instructions! Now I can go back to the step by step for the rest of the tag, which is absolutely yummy by itself!
What a beauty! Love the b'flies, the tearing, and the stitching. It all comes together marvelously!
ReplyDeleteVery elegant! So many fun little peeks of texture.
ReplyDeleteThis is simply beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi maybe someone on here can help me. I am trying to understand how to enter these challenges. I am uncertain of the linking back to funky junkie boutique part. My tags are on Pinterest so can anyone give me a pointer? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAlso, What size tags are used most?

ReplyDeleteAmazing tag! The background is stunning. Always love those butterflies.
ReplyDeleteI don't normally care too much for butterflies (& one of my kitties loves them even less; we call her "BudderCup the BudderFly Killer". *shrug* But this tag just reminds me so much of the kind of beautiful taste my late MomInLaw had. I would definitely have copied this in it's entirety just for her. She died just 3 days after turning 70 in Feb, 2011. This tag is very worthy of being praised for its delicate design.....BEAUTIFUL!!! :')
ReplyDeleteSimply beautiful tag Cheryl! Your background is gorgeous. I love the crackle paste and silver embossing paste...so elegant. The butterflies just pop.
